This programme cultivates a teaching and learning methodology that values artistic practice. It strives for a balance between contemporary art practices within students own socio-cultural milieu and theoretical discourses around it. The programme also underscores the beliefs that through studio experimentation and innovation, it is the role of the artist in research that generates and produces individual self-discipline, knowledge and discoveries that is pertinent to the realisation of artistic language/vocabulary. Students will acquire knowledge of the comprehensive critical, theoretical and historical discourses that inform contemporary artistic practice. Students will receive quality education through rigorous training that integrates research and practice, develop their abilities to conceptualise creatively, reflect upon the practice, and grow their individual and collaborative skills. The programme is delivered through a range of learning approaches that include lectures, workshops, seminars, group discussions and critiques, student presentations and individual tutorials. These approaches support the Masters candidates as they work towards a Final Research Project comprising of an exhibition of artworks and a supporting document in the form of an exegesis. Candidates are expected to be self-motivated, to engage in independent visual and theoretical research, as well as to develop the ability to evaluate their own work and to expand their awareness the critical developments in contemporary art. Time-based Arts is a unique undergraduate interdisciplinary programme that supports experimental works in the media that utilise time as a key element: artwork involved performance, animation, kinetics and electronics, interactive installations, sound and telecommunication. Time-based Arts is still a relatively young art form. Like other new artforms of this zeitgeist, its position and role remains in the state of flux. It is part of strong artistic lineages and disparate disciplines, but it defies clear classifications. This specialization defines Video and Time-based Arts as a hybrid, expanded medium of creative expression, situated at the powerful confl uence of contemporary art, technology, photography, post-war expanded media, art cinema, avant-garde cinema, television, popular culture, new media art and sound art. In this Specialisation, students will be familiar with not only the aesthetics and ideologies of ‘classical’ video and Time-based art practices, but embrace current explorations in digital technologies and future cinema, to eventually define their own forms of art. The spirit of experimentation, inquisitiveness and self-reflexivity about the medium is crucial. Students explore narrative and non-narrative genres, and create works that range from screen-based, single channel video, video sculpture, video and mixed-media installation, multiple projection, performance video and laptop performances. Programme provides the tools and concepts to investigate and manipulate the temporal domain of these disciplines are offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Applicants must pay a non refundable application fee of S$60 either by cash / NETS, credit card or cheque. In addition to these, they must submit certified-true copies of transcripts and certificates, portfolio, research proposal and statement of purpose. Certificates in a foreign language are required to be translated into English. Students may apply online.
